Party Trustworthiness Scorecard
Evidence-based assessment of each party's consistency, honesty, competence, and transparency. Every grade is backed by documented evidence. This tool helps voters make informed decisions — it does not recommend who to vote for.
FPÖ
GP XXVII-XXVIII (2019-2026) DD Promise Keeping
Flagship direct democracy promise diluted; party rejected 881K-signature Don't Smoke Volksbegehren. Volkskanzler promise failed — 37-day coalition talks collapsed. Never implemented binding referendum mechanism.
C Honesty
Strache Ibiza statements were bragging not policy. FPÖ distanced from Strache quickly. No systematic false claims documented beyond populist rhetoric.
D Integrity
Ibiza affair: willingness to trade state contracts for donations. FPÖ-United Russia pact. BVT raid under Kickl. Multiple investigations.
D Competence
BVT raid under Kickl: 19/20 searches ruled unlawful, all accused acquitted. Austria nearly expelled from Berner Club. Ivermectin Plan B: Ärztekammer condemned as Quacksalberei. Own former health minister broke with Kickl.
D Accountability
BVT raid (domestic intelligence raided by FPÖ-controlled police). Russia pact. Kickl obstructed oversight. But: accepted no-confidence vote 2019.
C Fairness to Opponents
Sharp rhetoric but within Austrian political norms. Criticism of ÖVP corruption substantiated by courts. No documented false claims about other parties' policy positions.
Grüne (AT)
GP XXVII (2019-2024, Coalition) BB Promise Keeping

B Honesty
Climate statistics from official Umweltbundesamt data (correct). Gewessler EU vote: legal justification vindicated by WKStA. But Klimaticket environmental impact rated 'eher gering' by Rechnungshof — Grüne emphasized sales over cost-effectiveness.
A Integrity
No corruption scandals during coalition participation. Clean record despite being in government with scandal-ridden ÖVP. Supported all anti-corruption measures.
B Competence
Delivered Klimaticket (nationwide public transport ticket), CO2-Steuer, Ökosoziale Steuerreform. But: failed to prevent Kurz-era scandals as coalition partner.
B Accountability
Accepted 2024 election result (8.3%, down from 13.9%). Participated in all oversight. But: criticized for staying in coalition with scandal-plagued ÖVP too long.
B Fairness to Opponents
Kogler 'Kurz ist nicht mehr amtsfähig' — vindicated by conviction. Kogler 'FPÖ ist rechtsextrem' — supported by DÖEW documentation but categorical framing goes beyond most political scientists' characterization.
NEOS
GP XXVII-XXVIII (2019-2026) AB Promise Keeping
Extracted outsized policy wins as 9.1% junior partner (Bildungsministerium, Sideletter ban, 2nd kindergarten year). But Krisper resignation over government compromises on civil rights raises questions. Uni Graz Politikmonitor: 17% implementation after 9 months.
B Honesty
Generally factual communication. Evidence-based policy advocacy. No documented false claims. Occasional rhetorical sharpening within normal political bounds.
A Integrity
No corruption scandals documented. Strongest transparency advocacy in Austrian parliament. Pushed for lobby register and disclosure rules.
B Competence
Vienna: MA 35 processing time -40%, but only 313/500 promised language teachers delivered. Record 3,747 parliamentary inquiries (250/MP) in GP XXVII. Federal Bildungsminister role too new to assess.
A Accountability
Strongest U-Ausschuss advocacy. Pushed for ÖVP/FPÖ investigations. Fully transparent party finances. Model democratic party structure.
A Fairness to Opponents
U-Ausschuss corruption criticism vindicated by Kurz conviction. 106-page faction report evidence-based. No documented false claims about opponents. Academic analysis notes distinctive positive communication style.
SPÖ
GP XXVII-XXVIII (2019-2026) BB Promise Keeping
Vienna 365-Euro Jahreskarte guarantee explicitly broken 5 months after election. But Gemeindebau NEU program and national Wohnpaket with first-ever free-market rent brake substantially delivered on housing.
B Honesty
Generally factual communication. No documented false claims. Leadership contest was contentious but transparent. Policy claims stay within advocacy bounds.
B Integrity
No major corruption scandals in this period. Clean record compared to ÖVP/FPÖ.
B Competence
Vienna: Europe's largest social housing system (220K units), record transit ridership. But federal level: party congress vote-counting Excel scandal, five years of leadership turmoil, historic worst national result (21.1%).
B Accountability
Constructive opposition. Participated in all inquiries. Supported Untersuchungsausschüsse.
B Fairness to Opponents
Factual criticism of ÖVP/FPÖ confirmed by WKStA and courts. No documented false claims about opponents. Policy disagreements stay within factual bounds.

D Integrity
Inseratenaffäre (Kurz convicted Feb 2024). Systematic use of public funds for manipulated polls. Thomas Schmid crown witness. Republic demands €2.75M.

Kurz resigned under pressure. Party eventually distanced from him. But: initial protection of Kurz, attempted obstruction (shredded hard drives after Ibiza).

Systematic attacks on WKStA as linke Zellen — condemned by prosecutors association and own coalition partner. Rechnungshof found EUR 108M government ads steered to ÖVP-aligned media. Message Control era under Kurz.

- We don't judge ideological positions
- We don't penalize coalition compromises (unless denied)
- We don't use media coverage as evidence
- Every grade needs 3+ independent sources
Grading scale
- A Strong: consistent, minor exceptions
- B Adequate: generally consistent
- C Concerning: multiple contradictions
- D Poor: systematic pattern
- F Failing: fundamental issues
